Digilent Motherboards 410-292 Editorial Review
The Nexys A7-100T is an FPGA board designed for use as part of a curriculum to teach Electrical and Computer Engineering. While FPGAs can be made to emulate microcontrollers or CPUs, there are no resources dedicated to this type of development from Digilent. The Vivado software used to program the board is available on the Xilinx website and is included in their free webpack download. The Nexys A7-100T comes with a micro USB cable for programming and power, and it can be alternatively powered by a 5V external power supply. Additional recommended peripherals include a VGA-capable monitor, SD card, full-sized SD to micro-SD adapter cable, SD card reader, USB keyboard, and a case to mount it in. The board is suitable for beginners, and it shows the power and ability of FPGAs vs microprocessors. It is worth the investment if one wants to gain a deeper understanding of logic design. Support and software from the manufacturer are great, and the product meets all requirements. However, it does not come with instructions, so one needs to download Vivado, and the datasheet is online. Users must know what they are doing as it is not easy to figure out. The clock speeds it can achieve are similar to those on the Arty boards, and it has the ports needed to implement a basic SBC or similar via a soft-core processor. It has a smaller DDR RAM module than the Arty boards (128MB vs 256MB), and the "case" it comes with is essentially an extra-thick padded DVD holder (can be used to hold the board when not in use), rather than something where one can mount the board and still have access to ports and the like. **
