From trouble at school to the imprisonment of his older brother, Jamal is Constantly surrounded by stress and uncertainty. When Jamal is pressured to join a neighborhood gang and is given a gun, he becomes entangled in a destructive love/hate relationship with the weapon. As the Consequences of his choices unfold, Jamal's only Constant support, his best friend Tito, is also affected. While this book tackles heavy themes for a Newbery Honor Book, it is an important read that sheds light on the realities of young people being pulled into violent lifestyles. The character of Jamal feels authentic, and readers can easily empathize with his emotions and reactions. Although there is no happy ending, the book serves as a reminder of the Consequences that can arise from such situations.
